off grid life without a genverter?

With a site named genverters.com you’d think that this topic wouldn’t be covered very much.  Really we promote starting with a genverter system and building it into your dream solar /  wind power off grid solution.  However, with snoopylaughour 11th year off the grid a series of events have me nearly living the alternative – generator only power!  UUgh!

The two week absence from updating this site came about from two highly unusual

Why choose a Netbook for off grid?

netbook pcWhy consider using or purchasing a Netbook style computer for your off grid move?  There are many advantages including size,  weight, and battery life that make this attractive over other computing choices.   There are some down sides too, but with proper planning you can have the best of both computing worlds size and power.  At least I  think I’ve found a good arrangement.

What got me thinking about my choice was the last 10 or 12 hours I spent with my machine the past day and a  half.  I upgraded my operating system from the original one I installed two years ago.

In the old days, the only way to get your router to talk with another was using

Part of the ‘”energy efficient” involves saving and using power resources wisely.  When using your PC saving time is saving energy.  We all have a fixed budget of 24 hours a day and can’t buy anymore, so saving time is what today’s tip is all about.  I shared this tip with a new ISP customer who was relatively new to the Internet.  She was so delighted with this tip, she insisted on paying a little extra!  Ding!  I’ll bet you may like it too.

For our Internet experience to have any value we need a map.  The Internet is a big place and being able to quickly return to important sites is very useful.  Search engines like Google are helpful, but having your own personal map or bookmarks is most valuable.  I enjoy using Mozilla Firefox as my primary Internet browser and

Remote Broadband options – part 3

zboostIn part one of this series I made the case for cellular Internet service over satellite Internet service.  In the second part, I provided information to help you find that distant signal if at all possible.  Now I’ll review the equipment that I use at my location to boost the 800MHz band cellular signal at my home.  The information and links will strictly be for the 800MHz band and will not work on the 1900MHz PCS band.  There is equipment available for it that may be the subject of a future post.

The primary unit is called the

The steps that I’ll suggest here, may not be the cheapest, but its thorough.  Trust me, you don’t want to skip this option and go to a satellite Internet connection unless you have no other choice!

Remote Broadband Options – part 1

  • Email communications with friends family and businesses.
  • Fax through Email service can be helpful for communicating in that medium
