Live in your head, or live off grid?

Living in your head.  Do you?  Everything starts in our head and that’s normal.  Very few actions we take in life are not reviewed and rehearsed in our minds first.  Usually the actions we didn’t think about first, are those we need forgiveness for.  However, if we never act on our plans, if it only looks nice in our mind, and we are happy with that, then we are either procrastinators or dreamers.   Either way there is a sense of loss.

How to solve the dilemma

I don’t know, but will take a stab at it anyway.  Take that big item you’d like to do someday.  I’ll bet you haven’t started actually working towards it because there is some “big” problem part way into the project.   Because of the “big” problem, you never get started breaking the project up into many smaller tasks.  These tasks are defined in small bite sized chunks that can be completed in a few minutes, or a single block of time.

Now your dream has a fine grained task list of small items.  Lets be concrete here and say your dream is to live off grid in a remote home.  No money for remote property?  No problem, create a plan to save money, create tasks to sell what you can, and simplify your life in the direction of your goal.   Now research areas and available property to see how much money you’ll need.  Once you sell a few items and create your new savings account, your project will have wings.  Heck, get a Kill-a-Watt monitor and start determining what your needs are with a power budget.  When there are multiple tasks completed in a particular direction, a real project is in place.  When all the steps are completed, something real is achieved with real tangible, physical results.

The giant of “getting started”

This giant must be conquered because its all a dream in your head until physical action begins.  This giant will rob you of dreams and precious time.  That’s how this post got started, by kicking my giant of writing.  My hope is that you might dust off some of those seemingly worn out goals, and get them defined into bite size tasks.  Complete a task, and move forward!

Why is getting started is the hardest part of any task?  I wish we knew.   Maybe its because if we do something, it may not be “right” or perfect as the one in our mind.  It might be messy and need adapting and fixing up.  Great! something started that needs adjustments is waaay ahead of the imaginary version in your mind!!  Do one of the bite sized tasks, and think of how good progress feels.  Now try another.  Tomorrow, do one or two more chunks.   Notice how some momentum starts to build?  Progress breeds more progress.

The hardest part of progress, is getting back on the wagon after you’ve failed to move for a few days or weeks.   This is when success seems the farthest, and is probably much closer than you might think.  Like the old Nike running shoe motto from years ago, “just do it“.  That motto sure helped in my ultra-marathon days.  The greatest journey begins with small tasks, or steps.  Some days just getting started writing here seems like a giant hurdle in my mind.  What I often find is that, once started, I end up writing way more than planned, researching, and providing more resources for you.

Okay, that completes our little pep talk.  Was this for your benefit, or mine?  Hopefully we’ll all pick up the next task in our projects a little sooner!

So what are your plans or dreams?  Buying remote property?  Building a cabin, and a genverter?  Getting Internet service there?  Was this a goofy post?  Tell us in the comment section below!
