Nine days till Christmas. Wow, it’s going FAST. AND, we have 7 inches of snow. We usually feel more Christmasy when there is snow.. In fact, we have always had a white Christmas over here, AND a white Thanksgiving except for last year. I love the snow, it is so…..winter y. It DOES make life more difficult.
Like last night. My car doesn’t have very good tires. I had to drive down the mountain in low gear and in 4 wheel drive low gear, and still slid a little. So we left my car half way up on the way back and went up in Marshall’s car. Soon we will be leaving BOTH cars at the bottom and using the Jeep pickup in 4 wheel drive low and chains to get up and down. And then, when there is about a foot of snow, we will switch over to the snowmobiles for transportation.
I know this lifestyle is not EVERYBODY’S cup of tea, but it is our lifestyle. And winter is a time that creates TRUE stories for us to tell. I remind my kids that they will have stories to embellish when they have kids or grandkids. We have numerous winter stories of driving down our mountain that would make your hair rise.
Like the time the cougar nearly ate Eric, my son. It stalked him for miles and was ready to LEAP on his back but he took off in the snowmobile JUST IN TIME!!!! That is an example of the kind of embellishing they can do. The REAL story is this….Marshall and Eric were putting down the hill on the snowmobile. About halfway down, in an area we call “the washboard”, Eric saw a shadow that was moving very fast (it was near dark) and he mentioned it to Marshall. So Marshall stopped cause he saw it too and thought it might be a deer. Eric looked and saw it was a COUGAR only 30 feet a way! So he hollared at Marshall, and said, “Dad it’s a cougar, GOOOOOO!” Marshall paused and said, “WHERE, WHERE!”. He then decided to take off without seeing it because Eric was so frantic. So he gunned the snowmobile and off he went. The “washboard” is a common place to find cougar kills in the winter. Unfortunately, it is also the road we have to take to get up and down. It is not an area we like to dilly dally in this time of year. So there is one example of something interesting happening to us on the way to town.
