Portable Heater Update

heater2I had to make a change to the portable heater I recently placed in the insulated serama chicken shed.  The temperatures here in Washington took a dive Sunday.   Monday highs near 10F and nights down to 3F.  This morning my daughter complained it was too hot in there, it was 78F and 4F outside!  Wish our house was that warm!

I had her open the door and let it cool off for awhile.  I told her not to put the towel at the bottom of the door to stop the drafts.  Couple hours later, it was over 70F again!  I went inside the shed and found that the uninsulated floor and frigid temperatures created a very cold spot at the bottom foot of the shed!  This is where the heater’s thermostat would read the temperature and keeping the heat on for too long.

I moved the heater to a stand 2 feet off the floor, at about the chicken cage level and sealed it all up again.   No problem, the temperature is holding at 45-50F where we want it.

Moral of the story:  set the portable heater on a stand to avoid over heating your room!

I use a small fan in my apartment to drive the warm air from the ceiling. As cold (35?) as it is right now in Bay Area, it’s necessary. You laugh… I don’t have insulation here!

Well … you could always raise your furniture on blocks or something so you’re always off the floor a few feet! save fan power too ;)
