Portable Heater, Insulated chickens, and a webcam

seramas2I’ve heard from several readers who thought it would be nice to view the web cam.  I’ve managed to arrange for public access to the web cam for a couple days.  The web cam does full pan and tilt, so you can move it around the room.  On the lower far left side of the camera view I hung up a digital thermometer to watch the coop temperature.

My daughter’s special chickens began the move into the fancy insulated chicken digs about 10 days ago.  Most of the chickens you see are the Serama variety that she specializes in.  Ondra was worried that I might get something wrong describing these little birds, so her paragraph is next.

Seramas are the smallest chicken breed in the world.  Seramas were imported to the US from Malaysia in 2001 by one individual from Vacherie, LA.  After the 1 month long quarantine was over, on September 10th, 2001, they were shipped to Louisiana, where the individual lived. On the morning of September 11th, 2001, all flights were grounded, due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The Seramas were stopped in Chicago, where they were fed by a resident vet until the restrictions were lifted. Importation of live chickens was banned shortly after.  — From Ondra, the serama expert.

The Serama coop web cam will be available for public use until Wednesday morning Dec 16th!  Have fun!! [Note: due to its popularity, this has been extended until Friday 12/18]

The web cam is powered by our solar + genverter power system.  The Internet connection is a 3 hop wireless connection from 17 miles away where it comes from a fiber connected network center from Rabbit Meadows Technology.  Over the years I’ve found several uses for the web cam on the ranch and will expand on that more in another post.

If you find this interesting, the web cam, or Seramas,  please leave your comments or questions as we’d be happy to answer!
