I ran across a fascinating small 1000W generator and thought this might be of great interest for those looking at off grid power options.
Every once and a while you run across a unique product that addresses a need so well that you know others will benefit from the tip. I don’t own one, but I came across a small generator that solves a big part of the efficiency problem.
The efficiency problem I speak of occurs when you need a 1000W generator at night for a couple 20 W CF lights. The generator works nearly as hard running 40W load as it would for an 800W load! However, by producing DC power from the motor and using an on board inverter for AC power output, Yamaha has a winning combination.
The Yamaha EF1000iS 1,000 Watt Gas Powered Portable Generator is light weight, and has a small compact design. It can produce high quality clean and efficient power from its small 27.9 lb package while keeping the noise down to a quiet 47dBa.
The 50cc 4-stroke OHV air cooled single cylinder engine can run loads up to 1000 watts. The engine speed is variable and automatically adjusts to precisely match load, this results in greater fuel efficiency and noise reduction. This differs from traditional designs that require a constant engine speed to produce AC power at the right frequency and voltage. This unit has a .66 gallon fuel tank and can run up to 12 hours. The EF1000isc comes with a two year warranty which hints at its reliable small 4 stroke motor design, and the robustness of its automatic low oil shut off system.
This little unit would be my top consideration if I ever need to replace my Honda 550W generator, that is if it ever dies! It is still running well every time I need it after having it around 16 years.
The Yamaha unit is higher on the cost/reliability scale, and there are other lower cost similar inverter based generators you might consider. Below I’ve included a link to one that is lower cost an probably okay for emergency/intermittent use.

As always, you get what you pay for, and 16 years later I enjoy my more expensive choice for that little Honda unit.
Have you ever used one of these newer generators? What is your favorite generator system? tell us below in the comments!
